Dr APJ Abdul Kalam was a missile man of India, popularly known as the people’s representative of India, his full name was Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam.He was a great scientist and the 11th President of India & born on 15 October 1931 to a poor Tamil Muslim family in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, with Zainulubudeene and Aashiyamma.
He started supporting his family financially at an early age. He completed his Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering in 1954 from St. Joseph’s College, Tiruchirapalli and Madras Institute of Technology, Chennai.
He joined DRDO (Defense Research and Development Organization) as a scientist where he designed a small helicopter for the Indian Army.
He had also worked with Vikram Sarabhai as part of the INCOSPAR committee. Later, he joined the Indian Space Research Organization in the year 1969, as a project director of India’s first indigenous satellite launch vehicle (SLV-III).
Due to his great contribution to the development of ballistic missiles in India, he has always been known as the “Missile Man of India”.
He was also instrumental in the successful Pokhran-II nuclear tests of 1998.
He is the third President of India to be awarded the Bharat Ratna (first Dr Sarvapali Radhakrishnan 1954 and second Dr Zakir Hussain 1963).
He has also been awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1981 and ISRO and DRDO in 1990 as well as the Padma Vibhushan for his contribution as a scientific advisor to the Government of India.
He has written several books in 2011 such as Wings of Fire, Ignited Minds, Target 3 Billion, Turning Points, India 2020, My Journey, and more.
