A magnet attracts small pieces of iron. We have read that the first discovered nearly 5000 years ago in a town called Magnesia in Greece ( now in Turkey ) in a form of rock . It was a lodestone since it was capable of guiding direction .It was an ore of iron called magnetite . The word magnet has been derived from the name of the town Magnesia .
