Photosynthesis can be carried out by any green parts of the plant. These green part contain chlorophyll the pigment that carries out photosynthesis in presence of sunlight and carbon dioxide. However, most of these pigments are present in the leaves therefore, majority of the photosynthesis is carried out in leaves. But yes young stem of the plants that are green in colour do carry out photosynthesis.
On the other hand, some bacteria like blue green algae do carry out photosynthesis even though they do not have leaves and stem. They do so because of the presence of the photosynthetic pigment i.e. chlorophyll.
