All the princely states of India merged expect for Jammu and Kashmir, Junagadh and Hyderabad. The era of the kings and princely states eventually ended in the year 1950.

The British had given the princely states of India the option to either choose India or Pakistan. However there were some states which did not want to choose either and declared complete independence.

The state of Jammu and Kashmir decided to go with the state of India after an invasion by the Pakistan forces. The state of Hyderabad was annexed by the police forces in the state of India after a year of declaring independence.

Junagadh initially chose the state of Pakistan but was however annexed by the state of India.
