Vertebrates are a sub phylum under chordates. All vertebrates posses all features of chordates like post anal tail, pharyengeal gills, notochord and nerve chord but all chordates do not posses the features of vertebrates like teeth, pinnae, mammary glands etc that's why the above statement has been stated

The members of subphylum vertebrata possess notochord during the embryonic period .thus the notochord is replaced by a bony vertebral column in the adult.
