Tectonic plates are massive pieces of rock which float on the surface of Mantle (we are situated on these pieces). These plates are continuously moving but their movement is so slow that we can't even feel it. When these plates move they interact with the bordering plates resulting earthquakes, volcanic eruption, the formation of mountains, etc. Hence, almost all tectonic activities occur near the borders of the plates (because the collision of plates takes place in the borders of plates).
