Although barium carbonate is not directly toxic to animals (or humans), it is used in agriculture as a rat poison. But if a person consumes it (by mistake), it reacts with the stomach acid and forms another barium salt 'X', which is highly toxic. The first aid for this is to drink a solution of a sodium salt 'Y', which is readily available in pharmacies. 'Y' reacts with 'X' to form barium sulphate, which is insoluble and not so dangerous, thus easily excreted out by the body.

X IS Barium Chloride (BaCl2) and Y is Sodium Sulphate (Na2SO4).
- Barium carbonate reacts with hydrochloric acid in the stomach to form a toxic salt barium chloride.
- BaCO3 +2 HCl --> BaCl2 + H2CO3
- BaCl2 is water-soluble and toxic.
- For detoxification, a solution of sodium sulphate is consumed to form insoluble barium sulaphte.
- BaCl2 + Na2SO4 --> BaSO4 + 2NaCl
- Barium sulpahte being insoluble is excreted out of the body.
