This line is given from the chapter "Two gentlemen of Verona" written by A.J. Cronin. This story shows the life of two young boys who were struggling to save their sister's life.
The author refers them as "gentleman" because being orphans they were very mature and hardworking. Their fate and circumstances made them mature and hardworking. They had an awesome easternness in their eyes which showed their devotion .
Nicola and Jacopo had a sister who had tuberculosis of spine and was hence hospitalised. To meet the expenses of hospital they have to work as tourist guides, sell newspaper and also clean shoes.
Their determined hope and faith made author to refer them as gentlemen.
hope this helps ..
