Bangladesh is one of the separated part of west Bengal. When Bangladesh was not separated from India west Bengal and Bangladesh combined were known as Bengal (a state of India) and the east was known as east Bengal (now known as Bangladesh) and west is west Bengal. When Bangladesh separated from India Bangladesh's name changed. Therefore, inspite of being in the east it is known as west Bengal.

It was when the partition of bengal into west end East bengal. East part of it became another country which is now the present Bangladesh. Whereas the west part of it remains in India getting it's name as west bengal despite being in East India.
Thanks! :-)
