-Aluminium oxide is an amphoteric oxide because it reacts with both acid and as well as bases to produce salts and water.

-It shows both acidic and basic behaviour.

Examples:

• Al2O3 + 6HCl -----------> 2AlCl3 + 3H20
(^^Reaction with acid^^)

• Al2O3 + 2NaOH --------> 2NaAlO2 + H2O
(^^Reaction with base^^)
