It is an important link in the aquatic food chain as, they help digest and consume algae as predators, this further helps to decrease the chances of high eutrophic nature of the water or surrounding oceanic biomes. The protozoans such as zooplanktons. The protozoans according to the food chain in the open ocean are also found in abundance. They are the prime sources to continue the aquatic food chain, such as, phytoplanktons is eaten by zooplanktons further they are eaten by small crustaceans. Since, they provide the primary consumer with a much needed energy, it also stabilises the whole food chain and maintaining the energy to an adequate level.
