amphoteric oxides are oxides that show properties of both metal oxide and non metal oxide , i.e behaves as acid as well as bases

hence they react with both acid as well as base and show neutralisation reaction...

another example of amphoteric oxide is zinc oxide

Al2O3 + HCl--------> AlCl3 + H2 O

this was with acid

Al Cl3+ NaOH ------> NaAlO2 + H2 O

this one was with base.....

and aluminium oxide reacts with both acid and base to form salt and water i.e perform neutralisation reaction

hence they are called amphoteric oxides
