Aluminium conductors have almost replaced copper for transmission purposes worldwide for the following reasons,

1) Conductivity of copper is higher than that compared to Aluminium. To be exact if compared, Aluminum has 61 percent of the conductivity of Copper. But if we consider another major parameter, i.e. weight of the conductor, Aluminium only weighs 30 percent of the weight of copper.

Hence, for same conductivity, light weight conductors can be prepared with Aluminium.
