Answer: This is because of the fact that the exchange of gases takes in lungs through alveoli . They are the smallest pathway for exchange of gases as they are just one cell thick . Millions of alveoli present in the lungs function to perform the task of lungs . That is why Alveoli are called the functional unit of lungs .
