Ambahan has several characteristics:

• First, the prosody of seven syllables and the rhythmic poetic expression  of the rhythmic final syllable. It is also most often played as an accompaniment to off-pitch songs or musical instruments.
• Finally, it is  an allegorical way, with the free use of poetic words, intended to express a particular situation or characteristic referred to by a poetic reader.
• Ambahan's characteristic of having seven syllables in one line is different from the poetic form of other Hanunó`o Mangyans. There are exceptions to this particular function.
• The first part of Ambahan can be 7 syllables or more, but this part may not be considered a proper poem  and is intended only as an introduction. This may be due to the lack of a suitable word combination for a particular line or the inability to shorten the line further.
• You can also make the line shorter than 7 syllables to preserve the meaning of the line. This rarely happens, but is changed by the addition of syllables.
