Here's the answer
Let the cost price be x
Selling price = 120/100
If he had sold it for Rs 36 , he would gain 23%
120x/100 + 36 = 123x/100
36 = 123x/100 + 120x/100
36 = 243x/100
3600 = 243x
x = 3600/243
x = 14.8
x = 15 Rs ( approx )
Cost price = Rs 15
Thanks!!

x = 3600/243
x = 14.8
x = 15 Rs ( approx )
Cost price = Rs 15

Solution :
i ) Let the cost price of the watch = Rs x
gain ( g ) = 20%
selling price ( s.p ) = x[(100+x)/100]
= x[(100+20)/100]
= 120x/100
= 6x/100
According to the problem given ,
If Amit sell the Wath Rs 36 more , he
gain 23%
Here ,
c.p = Rs x
new gain ( g ) = 23%
s.p = 6x/5
Now ,
x[ (100+23)/100] = s.p + 36
=> 123x/100 = 6x/5 + 36
=> 123x/100 = ( 6x + 180 )/5
=> ( 123x × 5 )/100 = 6x + 180
=> 123x/20 = 6x + 180
=> 123x = 20( 6x + 180 )
=> 123x = 120x + 3600
=> 123x - 120x = 3600
=> x = 3600/3
=> x = Rs 1200
Therefore ,
Cost price of the watch = x = Rs 1200
