Ammonia does not contain any hydroxyl group but it is considered a base. Why?

Ammonia (NH3) is a weak base, which does not have hydroxyl group in its formula but it gives OH- ions when it  reacts with water.

Ammonia has one lone pair of electrons on the nitrogen atom . this lone pair pair attracts proton and hence acts as proton accepter. therefore it becomes a lewis base .
