Ammonium chloride turns blue litmus red. This means the salt is acidic. Ammonium chloride is made from a strong acid that is hydrochloric acid and weak base that is ammonium  hydroxide.
Sodium carbonate turns red litmus blue. This means that the salt is basic. Sodium carbonate is made from weak acid carbonic acid and strong base sodium hydroxide
