This is because when others tried to invade the subcontinent the leadership was strong and they resisted any foreign powers. However, when the British too over subcontinent was weak and the puppet rulers the British put on the throne were a great help.

Many foreign powers such as Britain,France and Portugal set up trade in India.Among them Britain and France were strongest. But none of them showed themselves as a ruling body but as a trading body. The British first started its reign and thus started to gain more power and thus defeated other foreign powers in India.

SamriddhaChandra: aneekbiswas1, I didn't mark u because in your ans u mentioned how the British set up their empire. u had to describe why only British was able to do so and not other foreign powers.
AneekBiswas1: I ecplained that British was able to do so because they defeated other foreign powers.
AneekBiswas1: And so they were only able to set a colony
AneekBiswas1: Infact the truth is that British,France and Portugal all had colonies in India
AneekBiswas1: So where's the mistake?
