zero dipole moment means when the separation between the charges in a dipole is zero or the magnitude of charge is zero.

  1. CO2
  • The dipole moment of the carbon dioxide (CO2) molecule is zero.
  • In CO2 molecule the angle between O-C-O is 180° therefore when the oxygen atom attracts the electron pair towards itself then it becomes partially negative an carbon atom becomes partially positive.

2. BeCl2

  • The dipole moment of BeCl2 is zero.
  • Dipole moment of any molecule is vectorial addition of dipole moments of all the individual bonds.
  • The dipole moment of two Be--Cl bond is equal but opposite in direction, so they cancel out each other and the net dipole moment becomes zero.

3. ICl4-

  • The molecular geometry of ICl4- is square planar. The electron domain geometry is octahedral.

4. SF6

  • This spherically symmetrical structure means that the bond dipoles exactly cancel out.
  • SF4. Has 4 S-F bonds and a lone pair. That lone pair means the symmetry will not work to cancel out the bond dipoles.

5. SO2

  • Sulphur dioxide (SO2) is a bent molecule with Sulphur atom in the middle and the two oxygen atoms on the sides, one connected by a double bond and with the other oxygen ion by a single bond.
  • The difference in electronegativity of S and O is 1. So, the dipole moment created in S - O in case of SO2 atom will not be zero.
