Explanation:

V^ab = V^a - V^b

=450 -(-500)

=450 + 500

= 950

The relative velocity of the aeroplane A with respect to aeroplane B is 950m/s.

Given,

Velocity of aeroplane A flying north, vA=450m/s

Velocity of aeroplane B flying south, vB=500m/s.

To find,

the relative velocity of the aeroplane A with respect to aeroplane B.

Solution:

Velocity of aeroplane A flying north, vA in vector form=450m/s

Velocity of aeroplane B flying south, vB in vector form=-500m/s.

vAB=vA-vB

vAB=450-(-500)

vAB=450+500

vAB=950m/s.

The relative speed is 950m/s.
