The ratio between two sales would be 9:11.

Step-by-step explanation:

Consider the correct question is,

'An agent charges 5% commission on  cash sales and 9% on credit sales. If his overall return is 7.2% on the total sales,  find the ratio between the two sales.'

Suppose first sale is x and second sale is y,

∵ Percentage of commission in first sale = 5%,

So, the commission in first sale = 5% of x

                                                    = 0.05x,

Similarly, commission in second sale = 9% of y

                                                             = 0.09y

Thus, the total sale = 0.05x + 0.09y

But, total commission  = 7.2% of total sale

                                     = 0.072(x+y)

So, 0.072 ( x + y ) = 0.05x + 0.09y

0.072x + 0.072y = 0.05x + 0.09y

  0.072x - 0.05x  = 0.09y - 0.072y

               0.022x  = 0.018y

                         \frac{x}{y}=\frac{0.018}{0.022}

                         \frac{x}{y}=\frac{9}{11}

Hence, the ratio of the sales is 9:11.
