An airplane is flying at an altitude of 6000m over the ocean directly toward a coastline. at a certain time, the angle of depression to the coastline from the airplane is 14 degree. how much further (to the nearest kilometer)does the airplane have to fly before it is directly above the coastline?

please please I need it asap. its going to be recorded and I want to get it. please help me and explain. thanks <3

Given

  • altitude of plane = 6000m
  • angle of depression = 14°

To find

  • Distance the airplane have to fly before it is directly above the coastline.

Solution

From the figure we can understand that we need to find the distance that is x. we are provided with the angle of depression and the altitude.

Thus,

tan14 = BC/AB

or, tan14 = x/6000

or, x = tan14 (6000)

or x = 0.24(6000)

or, x = 1495.96

or, x = 1496 m

Distance the airplane have to fly before it is directly above the coastline is 1496m
