Anhydrides of inorganic acids are usually oxides of nonmetallic elements. Carbon dioxide, CO 2, is theanhydride of carbonic acid, H 2CO 3 . Nitrogen pentoxide, N 2O 5, is theanhydride of nitric acid, HNO 3 . Phosphorus pentoxide, P 2O 5, is theanhydride of phosphoric acid, H 3PO 4

carbon dioxide dissolves in water to give carbonic acid therefore carbon dioxide is called carbonic anhydride
