an antacid in the body works as neutralizing agents(base) which neutralizes excess acid in the stomach. Mostly metal hydroxides are used for this purpose because of being insoluble, they do not increase the pH above the neutrality
while hydrogencarbonate can trigger the production of more acid if it is used in excess.
