An article is listed at Rs 900 and two successive discounts of 8% and 8% are given on it. How much would the seller gain or lose, if he gives a single discount of 16%, instead of two discounts?

Answer:

5.76 Rs.

Step-by-step explanation:

CASE 1 : First discount of 8% is given on 900.

So, if 8% discount is given, then the selling price will be 828 Rs. ( 900 - 900×8%).

Now, second discount on 828.

If 8% discount is given, then the second selling price will be 761.76 Rs. ( 828 - 828×8% ).

So, if two successive discounts of 8% and 8% are given, the final selling price will be 761.76 Rs.

CASE 2 : A single discount of 16% is given on 900.

The selling price would be 756 Rs. ( 900 - 900×16% ).

So, if the shopkeeper sells the item on a single discount of 16%, then he will have a loss of 761.76 - 756 = 5.76 Rs.

Hope it is helpful.
