Water makes life as we know it possible. Every drop cycles continuously through air, land, and sea, to be used by someone (or something) else “downstream.” Water covers 70% of Earth’s surface, but only 3% is fresh, and only a fraction of one percent supports all life on land. Climate change and growing populations are increasing the pressures on that reserve. By using water more wisely, we can make sure there’s enough to share with all living things.
A status report on groundwater by the NCR Planning Board (NCRPB) reveals that the water table in Delhi was dipping by 2 metres every year. The report says the city currently draws 0.47 billion cubic metres (bcm) of water from the ground every year while only 0.28 bcm gets recharged. That means Delhi loses a whopping 0.19 bcm of groundwater in a year.
Water scarcity is expected to increase globally as populations boom and climate change sharpens uncertainty around the resource's availability, according to a report by the World Bank so it may be causes of wars among the people for water.
Notwithstanding the level of water pollution measures taken, we still have tremendous spills to water bodies, leaks of tanks and pipes, leachates to underground water aquifers from landfills and septic systems etc,.
Polluted water bodies are remediated using a combination of certain technologies and provisions of Government or local authority developed acts, regulations and guidelines.
