An asteroid and a comet collide head on. Prior to the collision, the asteroid has a momentum of 700,000 kg m/s up and the comet has a momentum of 800,000 kg m/s down. After the collision the asteroid has a momentum of 750,000 kg m/s down. After the collision, what is the comet's momentum?

Given info : An asteroid and a comet collide head on. Prior to the collision, the asteroid has a momentum of 700,000 kg m/s up and the comet has a momentum of 800,000 kg m/s down. After the collision the asteroid has a momentum of 750,000 kg m/s down.

To find : after collision, the linear momentum of comet is ...

solution : initial momentum of asteroid , P₁ = 7 × 10⁵ kg m/s

initial momentum of comet, P₁' = 8 × 10⁵ kg m/s.

final momentum of asteroid, P₂ = 7.5 × 10⁵ kg m/s.

let final momentum of comet is P₂'

using formula,

P₁ + P₁' = P₂ + P₂'

⇒7 × 10⁵ + 8 × 10⁵ = 7.5 × 10⁵ + P₂'

⇒7.5 × 10⁵ kg m/s = P₂'

Therefore the momentum of comet after collision is 7.5 × 10⁵ kg m/s.
