Answer:
During a race the activity of heart increases to supply oxygen and circulate blood. In normal conditions, our heart beats at the rate of 72 beats per second, but when we do any tedious activity like running in a race, our heart beat increases. Also anaerobic respiration occurs if we do not get enough oxygen. Thus to circulate more oxygen, heart needs more oxygen. So lungs have to get more oxygen and thus we breathe much heavily so as to supply extra oxygen.
