Azeotropes are a mixture of at leasttwo different liquids. Their mixture caneither have a higher boiling point than either of the components or they canhave a lower boiling point. Azeotropesoccur when fraction of the liquidscannot be altered by distillation.Sep 21, 2015Boiling point of liquid is nothing but the temperature at which vapour pressure of lquid becomes equal to the external atmospheric pressure.

Boiling point depends upon the vapour pressure. Mixture of two miscible liuids is known as azeotrotic mixture. This boils without any fluctuation in the boiling point.

When two liquids are mixed, the mixture has different vapour pressure than the individual components. Sum of the partial pressures of the components of the solution is equal to the total vapour pressure of the solution.

Azeotropic mixtures having lower vapour pressure have higher boiling points than the individual components, while mixture having high vapour pressures have lower boiling points.

Question:

  • An azeotropic solution of two liquids has a boiling point lower than either of the boiling points of the two liquids when it

Answer:

  • Positive deviation shows → minimum B.P. azeotrope

  • V.P = High → B.P = Minimum
