An echo returned in 3 s. What is the distance of the reflecting surface from the source, given that the speed of sound is 342 m s–1?

Let the required distance be d m.
Sound travels 2d m in 3 s.
Speed of sound(v) = 342 m/s.
By the problem,
   2d/3=342.
   d = 513 m. (Ans.)

t = 3 sec

v = 340 m/s

2d = v × t

= 340 × 3

= 1020 m

d = 1020 ÷ 2

= 510 metres

distance of the reflecting surface fro the source = 510 m
