an elastic cord can be stretched to its elastic limit by a load of 2N. if a 35cm length of the cord is extended 0.6cm by a force of 0.5N, what will be the length of the cord when the stretching force is 2.5N

Answer:

Given: elastic cord has a limit of 2 N, It can be stretched to .6 cm with a force of .5 N

Need to find elastic cord’s constant:

Force(F) = extension(e) x constant(k)

.5 = .6 x k, ==> k = 5/6 N/cm or  ≈  .833 N/cm

>>>>>>>Finding the extension without limit:

2.5 = e x 5/6, ==> e = 3 cm

Thus, this cord could be stretched (35 + 3 = 38) 38 cm

>>>>>>>But, you have a max limit of 2 N:

2 = e x 5/6, ==> e = 2.4

This cord can be stretched up to (35 + 2.4 = 37.4) 37.4 cm

>>>>>37.4 cm
