In third orbit potential energy of electron is -3.02 eV and in first orbit its energy is -27.2 eV so change in potential energy is -27.2 -(-3.02 ) = -24 eV

If you want it in joules multiply answer with 1.6 ×10^-19

When an electron in hydrogen atom jumps from the third energy level to the first energy level. The change in the potential energy of the electron is that it will increase.

Explanation:

Potential energy means the energy occupied by an object due to its position. When an electron moves from first energy level to third energy level then it means energy is absorbed by the electron due to which it has moved to higher energy level.

Therefore, kinetic energy of electron increases and potential energy decreases. But when this energy is released by the electron then it moves to lower energy level. Hence, kinetic energy of the electron decreases and potential energy increases.
