A- calcium oxide (CaO)

B- calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2)

C- calcium carbonate (CaCO3)

CaO + H2O ------ Ca(OH)2 + heat

This use in white washing

Identification of compounds A, B, and C

  • The chemical compound which is used for white washing is calcium hydroxide.
  • This substance is obtained when the element of calcium is made to react with water.
  • The equation involved in the reaction is as follows:

Ca+2H_2O\rightarrow Ca(OH)_2+H_2.

  • Thus from the above equation element A is identified as calcium whereas compound B is identified as calcium hydroxide.
  • When compound B which is identified as calcium hydroxide is heated, it leads to the formation of two products namely calcium oxide and water.
  • The equation involved in the reaction is as follows:

\mathrm{Ca}(\mathrm{OH})_{2} \stackrel{\Delta}{\rightarrow} \mathrm{CaO}+\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}.

  • From the above equation oxide C is identified as calcium oxide. When it is treated with water it again yields calcium hydroxide as per the following equation:

CaO+H_2O\rightarrow Ca(OH)_2

  • The compounds A, B, and C are identified as follows:
  1. Element A - Calcium (Ca)
  2. Compound B - Calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)_2
  3. Oxide C - Calcium oxide (CaO)
