If the formula of oxide is X2O3. It means oxidation state of element is +3.(criss cross method).That is element has tendency to loose 3 electrons from valence shell. Chlorine has tendency to gain one electron. 3 electrons lost by the element will gain by 3 chlorine atoms.So it will form a compound with chlorine having formula XCl3.
