An elevator cage of mass 900 kg when empty is lifted by means of a wire rope. A 72.5 kg man is standing in it. Assuming the acceleration of the cage as 3 m/sec2, find (i) tension in the wire rope, (ii) the reaction of the cage on the man.

Answer:

5902.5 N

Explanation:

T= mg

= 900*(9.8)

=8820 N

when accelerating at 3 m/sec2

T= mg- ma

= 8820- (9572.5*3)

= 8820- 2917.5

=5902.5 N

SOLUTION:

Mass of cage=900 kg

mass of man = 72.5 kg

acceleration due to gravity(g)= 9.8m/s

acceleration of cage( a)= 3m/s

TENSION= mg

tension=900*9.8

= 8820 Nm/s

tension= mg- ma

=8820-(900+72.5)*3

=7702.5
