When ester is treated with Sodium Hydroxide, Glycerol (Ethanol) and a Sodium salt of Carboxylic Acid (Sodium Ethanoate) is formed.

CH3COOC2H5 + NaOH → CH3COONa + CH3CH2OH

(This reaction is called Saponification reaction because it is used in the preparation of soaps)

Definition of saponification. 1 : the hydrolysis of a fat by an alkali with the formation of a soap and glycerol. 2 : the hydrolysis especially by an alkali of an ester into the corresponding alcohol and acid broadly : hydrolysis.
