A LAN (local area network) is a group of computers and network devices connected together, usually within the same building. By definition, the connections must be high speed and relatively inexpensive (e.g., token ring or Ethernet). Most university departments or research institutes are on LANs.

WLANs (wireless LAN) provide high speed data communication in small areas such as a building or an office. It allows users to move around in a confined area while they are still connected to the network. Wireless LANs share a similar origin with Ethernet LANs. Most modern WLANs are based on IEEE 802.11 standards and are marketed under the Wi-Fi brand name such as Airtel Wi-Fi or Idea Wi-fi or Motorola's ALTAIR.
