Given :   An executive in a company makes on an average of 5 telephone calls per hour at a cost of Rs. 2 per cell.

To find : the probability that in any hour the cost of the calls exceeds a sum of Rs. 4

Solution:

average of 5 telephone calls per hour at a cost of Rs. 2 per cell.

λ  =   5

P(x)  = λˣ  e^(-λ) / x!

in any hour the cost of the calls exceeds a sum of Rs. 4

=> Calls exceed by  4/2  =  2

probability  =  1  - P(0) - P(1) - P(2)

= 1 -  5⁰e⁻⁵/0!  - 5¹e⁻⁵/1!  -  5²e⁻⁵/2!

= 1 - e⁻⁵( 1 + 5 + 25/2)

= 1 - e⁻⁵(37/2)

= 1 - 0.12465

= 0.87535

0.87535 is the probability that in any hour the cost of the calls exceeds a sum of Rs. 4
