In cellular respiration glucose and oxygen yield water and carbon dioxide. So, when respiration begins, glucose molecules are split. In the opposite reaction - in photosynthesis, carbon dioxide and water yield glucose and oxygen. Thus, when respiration begins, water molecules are split.
