An inorganic compound on analysis was found to have following composition :Mg=9.76%,S=13.01%,O=26.01%,H2O=51.22%.Calculate the empirical formula of the compound

Let's find coefficients by dividing %content to molar mass. Mg : S : O : H2O = 9.76/24 : 13.01/32 : 26.01/16 : 51.2/18 = 0.41 : 0.41 : 1.63 : 2.84 = 1 : 1 : 4 : 7. So the empirical formula MgSO4*7H2O.
