The answer lies in the question itself

that the object moving at the speed of

5m/s

So initial velocity =5 m /s

final velocity =0 m/

Question:

An object moving with a speed of 5 m/s comes to rest in 10 s, after the brakes are applied. What is the retardation rate?

Answer:

Given:

Initial velocity of an object = 5 ms⁻¹

Time taken by it to come to rest = 10 s

We know that, v = u + at

where v ⇒ Final velocity

u ⇒ Initial velocity

a ⇒  acceleration ( here, retardation )

t ⇒ time taken

Since the object comes to rest , ∴ v = 0 ms⁻¹

v = u + at

at = v - u

a = v - \frac{u}{t}

a = 0 -\frac{5}{10}

a = -\frac{1}{2}

a = -0.5

Hence, the retardation of the body is -0.5 ms⁻²( the minus sign denotes negative acceleration).
