Given that, an object placed 30 cm from a concave mirror.

{ Object distance from mirror i.e. u is -30 cm }

The focal length of the concave mirror is 12 cm.

{ Focal length of convace mirror i.e. f is -12cm }

We have to find the position of the image formed (v).

Mirror Formula:

1/f = 1/v + 1/u

1/(-12) = 1/v + 1/(-30)

-1/12 = 1/v - 1/30

-1/12 + 1/30 = 1/v

(-5 + 2)/60 = 1/v

-3/60 = 1/v

-1/20 = 1/v

On comparing we get,

v = -20 cm

( Negative sign means that the image is in front of the mirror and its nature is Real and Inverted. )

Therefore, the position of the image is -20 cm.

Additional Information

→ Distance between Pole and Focus point is called Focal Length (f).

→ The distance of the object from the Pole of the mirror is known as Object distance (u).

→ The distance of the image from the Pole of the mirror is known as Image distance (v).

→ Concave mirrors are used in vehicles, used by dentists, used as a shaving mirror, used to produce heat in solar furnaces etc.

→ For magnification (m) = (Height of image)/(Height of object) or (hi)/(ho)
