Given :-

An object travels 200 m along the x-axis anx return back 80 m along the same axis.

To Find :-

Ratio of Distance travelled and the displacement

Solution :-

We know,

Distance is the total distance travelled by a body while Displacement is the difference between the final and initial position of a body.

Given, That the body travelled 200 m along the x-axis and then 80 m (No matter in which direction)

So,

⇒ Total distance travelled = 200 + 80

Total distance travelled = 280 m

As we know Displacement is the difference between the final and initial position so, given that the body first travelled 200 m in positive x-axis and then return back 80 m along the same axis.

So,

⇒ Displacement = 200 - 80

Displacement = 120 m

Now, Ratio of Distance to displacement can be calculated as,

⇒ Distance / Displacement

⇒ 280 / 120

⇒ 28 / 12

⇒ 14 / 6

7 / 3

Hence, The ratio of the distance travelled to the displacement made is 7 : 3

Answer:

\setlength{\unitlength}{5mm}\begin{picture}(8,2)\linethickness{0.25mm}\put(10,1){\vector(1,0){7}}\put(10,1){\vector(-1,0){7}}\linethickness{0.2mm}\put(14,1){\circle*{.2}}\put(13.72,0.1){\sf{O}}\put(5,1){\circle*{.2}}\put(8.5,1.7){\small\sf{200 m}}\put(14,1.5){\vector(- 1,0){9}}\put(5,0){\vector(1,0){4}}\put(9,1){\circle*{.2}}\put(6,-.6){\small\sf{80 m}}\put(8.8,.2){\sf{B}}\put(4.8,.2){\sf{A}}\end{picture}

Let the Object starts Travelling from Point O and travelled distance 200 metres to reach Point A then return to Point B by travelling 80 metres.

Total Distance Travelled :

⇒ Distance = OA + AB

⇒ Distance = 200 m + 80 m

⇒ Distance = 280 m

Displacement of the Object :

  • Displacement is the shortest distance travelled between Starting Point and Finishing Point.

⇒ Displacement = OB

⇒ Displacement = OA - AB

⇒ Displacement = 200 m - 80 m

⇒ Displacement = 120 m

\rule{180}{1.5}
