Let, the cost of the shirt was 'p'

17% of p = 17p/100

So, the customer paid = p+(17p/100)+3

                                     = (100p+17p+300)/100

                                     = 117p+300/100

By condition,

117p+300/100= 43

or, 117p+300 = 43*100

or, 117p = 4300-300

or, 117p = 4000

or, p = 4000/117

or, p = 34.19

(Ans): $34.19
