Let the length of the base = l

The base area = l²

The height of the box = 2/l²

Since it is an open box the surface are is :

(L × W) + (2 × H × W) + (2 × H × L)

L = the length

W = the width

H = height

Doing the substitution we have :

(l × l) + (2 × l × 2/l²) + (2 × l × 2/l²)

= l² + 4/l + 4/l

= (l² + 8/l) cm²
