Δh = 25.2 cm

Explanation:

An open U-tube of uniform cross -section contains mercury. When 40.8 cm of water is poured into one limb of the tube, then the difference in levels of liquids of the two sides is 25.2cm

Density of water = 1

Density of mercury =  13.6

PA = PC

Pw. g. h1 = 2y. pm.g

1 * 9.8 * 27.2 = 2y * 13.6 * 9.8

27.2y = 27.2

Therefore y = 27.2/27.2 = 1cm

Δh = h1 - h2 = 27.2 - 2y = 25.2 cm
