An ore on treatment with dilute hydrochloric acid gives a smell like that of rotten
eggs. What type of ore is this? How can it be concentrated? How can the metal be
obtained from the concentrated ore?

(a) Sulphide ore -
- Smell of rotten eggs is given by H2S gas.
- Sulphide ores release H2S gas on HCl treatment.

(b) Roasting -
- Sulphide ores on heating in presence of air concentrates ore into metal oxide.
MS + O2 --> MO + SO2


(C) Reduction with carbon -
- Metal oxides are reduced to pure metal by heating with coke(carbon).
MO + C --> M + CO2
