P is ethanol that is a constituent of wine.
It gets oxidised with acidified KMnO4 to form acetic acid.

Acetic acid reacts with sodium metal to form sodium ethanoate and hydrogen gas.
CH3COOH + Na → CH3COONa + H2

Aki456: But acetic acid doesn't react with sodium metal to evolve hydrogen gas
NamaBhai: it reacts and this is known as saponification reaction
NamaBhai: acetic acid is also called ethanoic acid
Aki456: OK thanks
