CH3CH2OH ethyl alchohol the compound is saturated .because the number of H atoms equal to 2n+2 here n is the number of C .there is a oxygen present then it should be alcholo becouse double bonds absent. It can be a ether but they mention it as an alchohol.for this formula we can draw both alchol and ethers.but here the answer is ethul alchohol as they mention it as an alchohol.

Answer:

P is ethanol (CH₃CH₂OH).

The Gas evolved is Hydrogen.

Explanation:

The molecular formula C₂H₆O suggests that the compound P is an alcohol.

Moreover, since it is an active ingredient in alcoholic drinks and medicines like tincture iodine, it is most likely ethanol (CH₃CH₂OH).

When a small piece of sodium (Na) is added to ethanol (P), a reaction takes place, and a new compound Q is formed.

The reaction is a typical example of a nucleophilic substitution reaction of an alcohol with a metal. The sodium metal is the nucleophile, and it attacks the oxygen atom of the alcohol.

The reaction can be represented as follows:

CH₃CH₂OH + Na → CH₃CH₂ONa + 1/2H₂

The gas evolved during this reaction is hydrogen gas (H₂).
